Smartwool- Second Cut Project • Billings & Helena

The entire month of April

Celebrate Earth Month by Giving Your Socks a Second Life

April is here, and with it comes Earth Month—a time to reflect on how small actions can make a big impact. One of our favorite ways to participate each year at both our Billings and Helena stores is through the Smartwool Second Cut™ Sock Recycling Program.

It’s simple, meaningful, and surprisingly impactful: bring in your old socks, and help keep textiles out of landfills.

What Is the Smartwool Second Cut™ Program?

The Second Cut™ Project is Smartwool’s initiative to create a more circular system for apparel—taking old materials and transforming them into something new rather than letting them go to waste. Instead of tossing worn-out socks, they’re collected, broken down, and repurposed into new products like yarn, insulation, and even future socks.

This matters more than you might think. Socks are one of the most commonly discarded clothing items, and textile waste is a growing environmental issue. Programs like Second Cut are designed to change that by making recycling easy and accessible.

Why It Matters

Smartwool’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond just good intentions—it’s measurable. Through the Second Cut program, the brand has already:

  • Diverted hundreds of thousands of socks from landfills
  • Helped keep tens of thousands of pounds of textile waste out of the waste stream
  • Worked toward a future of circular, low-impact products made from recycled fibers

Even better? You can recycle any socks—any brand, any condition (just make sure they’re clean).

How to Participate This April

In honor of Earth Month, we’re proud to be part of this initiative right here in our communities.

Here’s how you can join us:

  • Bring your clean, unwanted socks into our Billings or Helena locations
  • Drop them off in our in-store collection
  • Feel good knowing they’ll be transformed into something new

During April, many retailers nationwide host “take-back” events to make participation even easier, turning sock recycling into a community effort.

Small Actions, Big Impact

Recycling a pair of socks might seem like a small step—but multiplied across a community, it becomes something much bigger. Programs like Second Cut show that sustainability doesn’t have to be complicated. It can start with something as simple as cleaning out your sock drawer.

This Earth Month, join us in keeping good materials in use and out of landfills. Swing by, drop off your socks, and be part of a movement that’s turning old gear into new possibilities.

Let’s close the loop—one pair of socks at a time. 🌎🧦
